Two volumetric approaches to detecting leaks from aboveground storage tanks–precision temperature sensors and mass measurement approaches–are evaluated in this report. A set of controlled experiments on a 117-ft. diameter refinery tank is used to examine the effects of differential pressure on conventional level and temperature measurement systems. The features of a leak detection test needed for high performance are also explored. See also companion document Publ 322.
