This method describes an approach for determining the composition of materials such as deposits, scales and sludges of unknown composition that are created by chemical corrosion in pilot plants and refineries. Knowledge of the composition of such materials can determine the site or sites of the corrosion and possible remedies for the condition or conditions causing the corrosion. This method is an outline rather than an absolute procedure for determining the composition of such unknowns, and is intended as a guide, which may need to be modified by the investigator, in selecting testing regimes for unknowns of this type.
