This brief is the fifth in a series describing commuting in America. This body of work, sponsored by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) and carried out in conjunction with a National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) project that provided supporting data, builds on three prior Commuting in America documents that were issued over the past three decades.

Brief 5 describes the changes taking place in employment patterns in the U.S. from the perspective of how this might influence commuting. This brief completes the information about the work force and employment presented in Briefs 3, 4 and 6.
